Bennie Shelton was born on January 29, 1940, in Strong, Ar, to the late Alex Shelton Sr. and Nelie Rogers.
Bennie accepted Christ at an early age and joined Curry Chapel AME Church in Strong, AR, where he was a faithful member until his health failed. He served as a member of the usher board and Stewart and trustee board. He sang with the men of Curry Chapel faithfully until his health failed. Mr. Shelton loved his Curry Chapel family dearly.
On January 29, 1964, he married the love of his life, the late Yvonne Cargile. They shared 57 wonderful years together and raised four beautiful children. For many years Bennie worked at west Fraser in Hutting, AR, until he retired in 2008. After retirement, he pursued his love and passion for children. He joined the Strong Booster Club, where he was given the name “Popcorn Man.” He loved to fish and spend time with his children, grandchildren, and family near and far.
Bennie Shelton departed this life at the age of 81, on Thursday, August 12, 2021, at his home. He is preceded in death by his wife, Yvonne Shelton, one son, six brothers, and two sisters.
Bennie’s memories will be cherished by one son: Michael Shelton of Strong, AR, two daughters: Alice Blackman (Brian) and Josephine Harris of El Dorado, AR, one sister Iteria Dixon of Little Rock and two brothers: Lawrence Shelton (Kathy) and Alex Shelton Jr. of El Dorado, AR, ten grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, special friends Otis Lee, Jerry Burson and Mattie Boyette. He leaves a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends who will miss him dearly.
