December 18, 1940 — October 13, 2008

"I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. II Timothy 4-7." Sister Effie Dean Cook was born on December 18, 1940 in El Dorado, AR to Willie(Buck) and Pearl Burns. She attended Mt. Sinai Frewill Baptist Church at an early age and later united with First Baptist Church-Cordell, where she served as Deaconess, the choir and Circle Ruth. She was a graduate of Washington High School, Class of 1959. On December 25, 1959 she united in holy matrimony to LaVan Cook and remained a devoted wife for forty eight years. To this union they were blessed with three daughters, Gilda, LaCretia and LaSharn. She was employed at Cooper Industries in El Dorado, Arkansas and Teletype Manufacturer in Southwest Little Rock. On Monday, Ocotber 13, 2008, the Lord called Sister Effie home into eternal rest. She was preceded in death by her father and her sister. She leaves to cherish her memories, a loving and devoted husband, LaVan Cook; three daughters, Gilda Lorraine Smith(Leon) of El Dorado, Arkansas, LaCretia Del Cook of Raeford, North Carolina and LaSharn Va'Che Gilmer of Los Angeles, California; her mother, Pearl Burns of El Dorado, Arkanas; three grandchildren, LaVanessa, Joshua and Kennedy; three nieces, Princis Oliver(Leonardo), Evelyn Jones(Curtis) and Sharon Clark; eight nephews, Glenn Oliver(Stephanie), Anthony Oliver, James Smith, Jr., Floyd Smith(Vickie), Lloyd Smith(Brenda), Paul Clark, Jr. Reginald Cook, Sekou Cook and a very special niece, Tonie Ann Ward and a host of other relatives and friends. A homegoing celebration for Effie will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church Cordell with the Rev. Pierce Moore officiating. Interment will follow in the Lott Burgy Cemetery under the direction of the Sims Mortuary Staff. Visitation at the funeral home will be held on Friday, October 17, 2008 from 9:00am-5:00pm and Saturday from 8:30-9:30am. The family will receive friends at 903 Brookwood, El Dorado, Arkansas.
