Bro. James D. Island was born on June 22, 1955 in El Dorado, Arkansas, the son of John and the late Nannie Bell Island. He united with New Bethel Baptist Church at an early age where he was a strong, faithful member, who served his church as Chairperson of the Trustee Ministry. James was united in holy matrimony to Gwenda Brock on June 11, 1983 and they were blessed with one son. James was carried into eternal rest on Tuesday, March 13, 2007 at his home. James was preceded in death by his moher; Nannie Bell Island and a sister Linda Ann Island. James graduated from El Dorado High School in 1973 and received a B.S. degree from Southern Arkansas University in 1988. James later went on to master several trades including becoming a Master Plumber and Electrician. He was also the proud owner of Island and Sons Construction. He was employed by Chemtura-Great Lakes Chemical for 28 years. He leaves to cherish his loving memories; his wife, Gwenda B. Island of El Dorado, Arkansas; two sons, Eric(Tristal)Island and Brandon D. Island all of El Dorado, Arkansas; his daughter, Yashica Island of Portland, Oregon; his father, John Island of San Francisco, California; three brothers, Andrew Charles of San Francisco, California, Ricky Island and Ibn Abdullah both of El Dorado, Arkansas; four sisters, Barbara Jean McGuire of Hayward, California, Nadine Island of Stephens, Ella Faye and Elizabeth Island both of El Dorado, Arkansas; a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends. Homegoing services for Bro. Island will be held on Monday, March 19, 2007, 11:00 a.m. at New Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Bobby Patterson officiating. Interment will follow in the Lott Burgy Cemetery under the direction of the Sims Mortuary Staff. Visitation will be at the Funeral Home, Sunday, March 18, 2007 from 1-5 p.m. and Monday, March 19, from 8-9 a.m. The family will receive friends at 3826 Michael Lane, El Dorado, Arkansas. James was carried into eternal rest on Tuesday, March 13, 2007 at his home.
